Asian Fusions (2024—) is a multidisciplinary web platform that delves into the complexities of identity and belonging within the Southeast Asian diaspora. What began as a personal exploration out of longing soon became a space to ask difficult, often taboo questions—such as the effects of Asian fetishes, internalized racism, and the challenges of navigating relationships in a predominantly white society. These questions, being hard to answer, proved even more uncomfortable to ask.
After three years of extensive visual research, I discovered a vast archive that finally made me feel seen. As a third-culture kid unable to fully access my Malaysian heritage, I’ve found comfort in seeing my culture through others’ lenses, a process often accompanied by shame but vital for those of us living away from home.
While informed primarily by my perspective, my research which involves sociological and psychological studies, essays and interviews, revealed that the themes I address resonate with others from marginalized backgrounds, opening the door to a broader, cross-cultural conversation.
Asian Fusions is a platform for exploring the complex, often unspoken aspects of identity and belonging.
As I continue my own journey, I hope this project offers others a safe space where those who have felt underrepresented can see themselves and their experiences reflected. This is just the beginning of a larger conversation, one I hope will one day grow into a physical space where these complexities are welcomed, explored, and celebrated.
